About Us

Welcome to The Homesteader School!

Historically, the term “homesteading” was used in relation to the settlement of land by pioneers, farmers and ranchers.

Today, homesteading defines a lifestyle reminiscent of the simplicity and sustainability of that bygone era. It may involve a deliberate focus on raising and preparing wholesome food, careful stewardship of resources, or some degree of independence from commercially produced goods.

Although we may modify older practices with modern equipment and updated techniques, today’s homesteaders yearn to live closer to nature and get “back to the land” however it fits into their lives. Many also want to live more frugally, making the most of their resources and using them for multiple purposes.

Though living a simpler life may not mean working less, the work is fulfilling and enriching, and it feels good! There’s no denying the effort involved – but most would agree that the rewards are abundant.

No matter where you live, if you are a homesteader at heart, you will enjoy The Homesteader School’s instructional tutorials. The posts will cover a diverse range of skills helpful in rural environments as well as suburban and urban homes and backyards.

If you currently live on acreage, you can readily apply many of the practices shared on our blog. If you are hoping to move to a rural property someday, you can learn and get started–it’s never too early to develop skills for the future.

And if you just want to live a simpler, more wholesome life in the suburbs or city, you’ll find lots of ideas you can implement right now in your kitchen, home, and outdoor spaces.
